iPhone 4 released – a cool videophone

new iphone4 back

Apple did it again. I admit even as jaded as I have grown towards technology when I saw Steve Jobs make that Facetime call yesterday I was kinda blown away. I’ve been involved in piecing together old systems with new applications and well when Steve Jobs and Apple make a new thing it. Well it just works. I’m sure the 500+ WiFi base units in the room had a lot to do with the technical difficulties but

When it got up and running I was taken back to my childhood when this was the stuff of cartoons and fantasy. Now it’s something I can go to the Apple store on June 24th and drop a few hundred bucks and then I’ll have a videophone too. Granted I’ll only be able to talk to other iPhone 4 owners who are in a wifi access area but I know a few folks who are conquering the whole AT&T network difficulties by using the Verizon Myfi and connecting to that AP for browsing when the AT&T is slow.

Now that we have 4G from Sprint mobile access points I’m sure that the videophone calls will be possible on the move sooner then later.  after all before Cable started to offer internet and Phone services also we used to have three compaines all involved in our home entertainment so we can go back to that with multiple mobile providers. you can have the Apple iPhone 4 and use the Facetime on the go but you will just have to deal with that Verizon or Sprint bill for the mobile WiFi.  I know that I’d be willing to deal with that.

Sprint is the first with a new technology, but I still want an iPhone.

Like Disappearing Ink for your TXTs

Just came across a new iPhone App called tigertext that allows you to send text messages what have an expiration date. Of course if you follow what one of my favorite University Professors said about writing that , “Imagine everything you write will eventually appear on the front page of the New York Times” ,  you might not need this app.

Yeah Right.  Welcome to the real World.

Never before has it been so easy to ask for what you really want of other people.  silent and instant you bang out a text message (pun intended) and find out whether or not it worked. hey for anyone who like to “play a numbers game” you could highlight a few names and send the all the same message in the time it takes to craft just one.

Hangover.

so Sunday morning — OK Afternoon — it was a good night afterall you’re looking at your iPhone sent messages and it looks like somone must’ve slipped it out of your pocket and started sending all kinds of  SMS notes to your entire contact list.

Panic.txt-fail

Not to worry you were using Tiger Text  Right? (I like that the authors oft his app have given their muse credit in the name of the app.  not to mention if you are a young lady who wants to send a hot pic out you can use this app to delete upon open so you can give a peek and nothing more to keep this kind of thing from ending up on whatever ex-revenge site at some future date.

Calm Restored.

So hit up http://www.tigertext.com/ and you can go on acting however you like safe in the knowledge that you have control of your texts.
unless you send it to the wrong contact. (see pic)

Sprint 4G is available in a few cities already.

wimax-logo aka 4GSprint has rolled out a few cities already on their 4G network. after looking I see that Las Vegas, Nv , Chicago, IL , and Philadelphia,PA are all listed on their site now along with Baltimore,Md I’ve read that they are planning on rolling out 10 cities this year and where I am Washington, DC is on the list. so I guess it’s a matter of waiting and seeing what is going to happen. I’m looking forward to see if a Verizon Wireless/AT&T competition will bring us 4G across the board or if it’s going to be a media/Marketing driven kind of campaign and we will be stuck with the older tech.  If Sprint can get the public informed to the fact that their 4G network is a lot like cable Internet access but over the airwaves it can certainly gain them more business. however if they don’t have the handsets that people desire it’s going to be tough to start grabbing market share from their competition. if you’re in the cities where there is service check it out.

Please. Don’t. Answer.

I suppose one of the side effects of being  connected is that you’re always connected and available. While being in contact with others is mostly good, there are times when you don’t want to actually connect in real-time but

need to get a message out about something.

for example:  you’re going to be late, calling in sick, want to avoid an awkward conversation.

There are some situations where a text message would not work well so what to do.

THE SOLUTION

Like the title of my post you could dial the number and pray. But if you’re hoping to avoid them no doubt they are looking to take your call.  This is obviously not the best option.  Luckily for you your’re reading this. Here’s how how to avoid reaching somone on a cell phone.  slydial – Voice Messaging connects you directly to the other persons mobile voicemail box. it’s currently available on blackbery and can certainly save you some awkward moments. without having to resort to the much less personal text message or email.  or you could dial the number and get lucky that they don’t answer their phone.

Google Nexus One = no AT&T 3G data for you

nexus one

nexus one

I love when one company tries to block another from competing. it makes for a rather fun set of fights. looks like Google has taken another shot at AT&T and why not? does anyone really like AT&T  from the looks of the report that most people hate their jobs.  I’m not even sure that AT&Ts own employees are going to defend them.  so what am I getting at? Well  I am currently tangled up  like many consumers in a 2 year contract with the Beast that is AT&T. I’ve really got no complaints at the moment I don’t have an iPhone and the model of Blackberry was not a full 3G it used the slower EDGE technology.  I never experienced the problems of iPhone users are having unless – and here is where the fun begins…  I try and call my friends who have iPhones.  To have a conversation with one of my friends in the NY area it’s likely we will have to reconnect 4-5 times in a 15 minute conversation. Gee thanks, but I actually paid the early termination fee to get away from Sprint and this kind of problems  many years ago- I really wanted that new RAZR that had just come out and was all the Rage.  but that’s not what I actually intended to talk about.

Does Google Hold Grudges?

Why am I not able to get the new Nexus One phone which will work on AT&T for  3G data.  googles own site mentions that it does not use the same frequencies for 3G data transmission.  hmmmm. I’m not a cellular engineer , don’t want to be one but it seems funny to me that I can’t get myself a Google Android Nexus One and use it to its full potential on AT&T.  Is this a grudge against AT&T users ? Or could it be AT&T itself.  That hardly seems useful since they are a massive cell network and hmmm.  This is kinda neat actually- Google has always and will continue to be run by smart people I really can’t see this as being an oversight.  I can buy an unlocked Nexus One but I can only use it as a phone if I’m on AT&T  why then is is worth $530 ? I’m sure there are a lot of things I won’t be able to do if I can’t get data at 3G speeds.  This seems odd.  Not sure what just happened but I think we are witnessing a new way of doing things… Well not really,  it’s always been my opinion that  when large entities go to battle it’s the little guy who pays for it.  I just hope the folks who rush out to put this Nexus thing on AT&T are informed that it won’t do 3G Data

I wonder what does that map look like ?
